Teresa Benitez-Thompson’s first fight for change was personal. As a teenager, she testified before Nevada lawmakers when food assistance requirements threatened to force her younger sister out of school while raising a baby. Their advocacy helped change the law, allowing her sister to continue her education and support her son.
That experience sparked a lifelong commitment to organizing and social justice. Teresa worked as a waitress to help pay for college, then earned a master’s degree in social work to turn that commitment into a career serving others.
